Report a Concern
Where to Turn When You Have a Concern
You don't have to know exactly what's wrong (or which office should handle it) before raising a concern.
If something involving University resources, financial activity, or business practices seems strange, odd, or concerning, there are several ways to ask questions or report what you've observed. Choose the option that makes the most sense for your situation.
Where Can I Report a Concern?
UVA provides several ways to raise questions or report suspected fraud, waste, abuse, mismanagement, or other concerns.
UVA Compliance Helpline
The UVA Compliance Helpline provides a way to report concerns about possible violations of law, regulation, or University policy. Reports may be made anonymously.

Financial Compliance or the Office of Audit & Compliance?
Financial Compliance and the Office of Audit & Compliance both support responsible stewardship at UVA, but they serve different roles.
Financial Compliance
Financial Compliance works collaboratively with schools and units to strengthen financial processes and internal controls, understand and manage financial risk, meet applicable requirements, and address questions about financial compliance.
If you're trying to understand a process, strengthen a control, evaluate a financial risk, or determine what you should do next, Financial Compliance can help.
Office of Audit & Compliance
The Office of Audit & Compliance provides independent assurance and serves a distinct role in evaluating University operations, controls, and compliance. It also provides channels for reporting concerns that may require independent review.
You don't need to determine which office is ultimately responsible before asking for help. If you're unsure where to begin, reach out and your concern can be directed appropriately.
What Should I Include?
When raising a concern, provide the information you have available. Helpful information may include:
- What you observed or what concerns you
- When and where it occurred
- People, transactions, systems, or processes involved
- Relevant documents or other information you already have
You aren't expected to investigate the situation yourself or prove that misconduct occurred before reporting a concern.
Not Sure Whether Something Should Be Reported?
If you're still trying to understand what you've encountered, start with Recognize Risk for examples of situations that may deserve additional attention.
