Doing Business With UVA: How to Get Started

Doing Business With UVA: How to Get Started

UVA uses a decentralized purchasing model, meaning suppliers should reach out directly to departments that may be interested in their offerings. Once a department is ready to issue a Purchase Order (PO), suppliers can register in UVA’s procurement system.

Procurement Services uses its website for all public postings as required by the Public Procurement Act in the Code of Virginia.
Other opportunities related to major construction projects and professional services can be found on the Facilities Planning and Construction (FP&C) website.

Risk Management & Sales on Grounds

Vendors performing business with UVA faculty and staff must carry insurance (typically, a $2 million liability policy). Depending on the type of business, the insurance requirements can vary.

If you plan to sell food on campus (not directly catering to faculty/staff), you must be approved by Aramark, UVA’s contracted food vendor. Aramark will verify compliance with University requirements such as insurance, inspections, and food safety.

SWaM Certification

The SWaM Certification Program is a state initiative by the Commonwealth of Virginia aimed at enhancing procurement opportunities for Small, Women-owned, and Minority-owned businesses taking part in state-funded projects.

SWaM certification is optional but can help businesses qualify for reduced fees and increase competitiveness in state procurement.

EVA Registration – Statewide Procurement Access

Registering with eVA, Virginia’s electronic procurement system, allows small businesses to supply goods and services to state agencies and departments, including UVA.

Benefits of eVA Registration:

  • Access to statewide procurement opportunities
  • Notifications of bid opportunities
  • Streamlined vendor profile for state buyers

Note: This applies only to vendors providing goods and services to UVA (not individuals registering for reimbursements).

UVA hosts catalogs and delivers electronic orders through its own eProcurement System, the UVA Marketplace. However, state law requires that 75% of the University's purchasing dollars go to eVA-registered vendor ordering locations. Both vendors and UVA are assessed an eVA fee on all such orders, with some exceptions.
