UVA Sustainability - Help Reduce Food Waste!

UVA's Office for Sustainability is excited to introduce Free Food Alert, an app that connects users with free leftover food from events across Grounds! Students, faculty, and staff can receive push notifications whenever free food becomes available. UVA Sustainability is currently seeking faculty and staff to sign up as event hosts. Hosting is simple -- share leftover food after your event to help others enjoy it while reducing cleanup. Setup takes just 20 minutes!

How to Become a Host:

  1. Sign up at https://freefoodalert.com/web/signup with a virginia.edu email
  2. Complete in-platform training that covers federal food safety and giveaway management (18 minutes + 6-question quiz)

From there, sending out alerts is easy. You just enter a few details and snap a photo of the food you're giving away. If you want to end the giveaway early or run out of food, the app will notify subscribers that the giveaway is over.

UVA Sustainability is currently in a soft launch to ensure the app runs smoothly at UVA. Once 20 hosts have been registered, there'll be launching a major outreach campaign to recruit student subscribers (but staff and faculty are encouraged to subscribe too!). If you have any questions or ideas pertaining to the app, reach out to Shannon Sahs at jce4jp@virginia.edu.

If you are interested in learning more about reducing waste, sign up for the upcoming Zero Waste Events training on February 20 at 1:00pm. This event will be held on Zoom. Please register here.

Thanks for helping to combat food insecurity and reducing waste!
